The Site Medical Director & Chief of Staff at Cowichan District Hospital (CDH) is a leadership position with two functions: As Site Medical Director, the position works in a co-leadership model with the Site Director to ensure integrated, high quality service delivery within the site. As Chief of Staff, the position links directly with Department Heads and Division Heads to monitor and enhance medical governance within the site.

With plans for a new Cowichan District Hospital opening with an expanded bed base in 2026, the site medical director and chief of staff will play a crucial leadership role during this transition period, ensuring sustainable medical HR planning for teams and smooth transition and expansion of services into the new build.

To reflect this expanded role, FTE for this position has been increased from 0.4 to 0.6 FTE from now until 1 year after the transition to the new build is complete.

This position reports to the Medical Director for the Cowichan Valley Hospital & Community.

Main responsibilities of this position:

  1. Leadership: Co-leads and oversees activities to ensure service delivery is integrated within the site; Links with appropriate Departmental Medical Leaders to address matters of physician governance, including professional medical practice issues.
  2. Operations & Quality: Co-monitors site performance with a focus on issues that arise between programs, and facilitates course corrections when necessary; Ensures appropriate investigation and resolution of site-related PSLS and PCQO events; Collaborates with Departmental Medical Leaders and Medical Affairs to address individual practitioner quality issues.
  3. 改变米anagement: Co-develops and implements change management plans to engage and support site physicians and staff through change.
  4. Informatics: Oversees activities that advance technology and data use to improve service delivery using the electronic health records (EHR) in collaboration with the Quality Systems team.
  5. Planning: Assesses, monitors and anticipates site resource needs and works with medical leaders and administrative leaders to prioritize these needs within available resources.

  • Will use Island Health email address for work related to this position
  • Will dedicate time to this position during Island Health regular working hours, or as agreed upon with the Medical Director for Cowichan Valley Hospital & Community
  • Will participate in orientation and training
