We are pleased to welcome Dr. Beck as the new Pediatrics Division Head effective January 1, 2022.
贝克博士completed his MD at Harvard Medical School and his residency in pediatrics at MassGeneral Hospital for Children and the University of California, San Francisco. Additionally, he completed his fellowship in critical care medicine at Montreal Children's Hospital through McGill University and an extra year of clinical training at Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
When asked Dr. Beck why he chose this particular specialty, he replied that he always found pediatrics fascinating from a clinical perspective but what clinched him was how much fun it was.“Where else do you get to take care of patients while sitting on the floor and playing with them?”Critical care changed that somewhat (less sitting on the floor and playing with patients), but it was a field he felt he could make a positive difference in patients' and families' lives. He also found critical care to be intellectually stimulating, with physiology playing a primary role in decision-making, and he found he thrived in the high-intensity setting.
He finds his work very rewarding, especially when the critically ill patient has been taken care of attentively and they can return to their family as a happy, healthy child. Knowing that he can take the worst thing that has happened to a family, namely their child's critical illness, and turn it into a positive experience for them is what he finds most meaningful.
Dr. Beck is involved with the pediatric arm of Real-Time Virtual Support, an on-call system where rural healthcare providers can access specialists. Through this, he believes they are making real progress in reducing disparities in access to care between urban and rural or underserved communities. He hopes that our healthcare system will continue to find innovative ways to reduce healthcare disparities.
In his spare time, he spends most of it with his family, his partner and their two children, 8 and 11 years old. They enjoy camping together, skiing and enjoying the beautiful wilderness of the west coast. Other than that, he spends a lot of his free time cooking and baking sourdough bread these days.
Welcome Dr. Beck!
